WINSFORD Academy has another county cup-winning girls football team to celebrate.

Just a few weeks after the under 13s girls lifted the Cheshire Cup and reached the National Cup Final - to be played at West Bromwich Albion FC on Monday, May 20 - the under 14s have also now been crowned the best team for their age group in Cheshire.

The Winsford team won the trophy by beating Warrington’s Great Sankey High School – the same school the younger team beat in their final – at Middlewich Town FC on Tuesday, with the girls running out 2-0 winners.

Several players from the under 13s team formed part of the combined Year Eight and Nine side, and they made a superb start when Ella Clarke curled home an excellent free kick to give them the lead.

Great Sankey then started to have a few chances on the counter-attack, but they found captain and goalkeeper Phoebe Nowell in excellent form to keep them out.

After the break, the Warrington school came out stronger in their quest to get back into the game and even hit the woodwork while forcing Nowell, who was eventually named player of the match, into some more good saves.

However, the Winsford girls settled down and added a late goal from Ella Hopley to secure the victory.

Squad: Ella Clarke, Ella Foy, Jess Goodwin, Libby Mellor, Phoebe Nowell, Mia Hurst, Phoebe Billinge, Ella Hopley, Esme Entwistle, Faye Yarwood, Evie Rowland, Ruby Williams, Imogen Barnes
